Manzanita refers to many species of Arctostaphylos, an genus of trees and shrubs found in the chaparral biome in western North America. Various species grow from Southern California to northern Mexico. Throughout much of their range, they thrive in arid and dry climates.
Manzanitas are known for their distinctive bark, which is red. It serves as an important signaling color in the natural world, especially to humans. This color is not found on all manzanitas, however. In some species, the bark is smooth and does not show the distinctive pattern.
Manzanita trees are easy to grow from seedlings or cuttings. When starting a manzanita tree, dig a hole about twice as wide as the root ball and one quarter as deep. After that, untangle the roots and plant the young manzanita above the soil level. Once it has sprouted, water the plant regularly. Keep the roots moist by spraying or placing a plastic bag over the soil. Planting manzanita in a container requires a little more care and attention than planting it in the ground. Watering your manzanita tree in a container should be done at least once a week until the leaves have developed. Once it has a strong root system, you can begin transplanting it to a new location. Just make sure you plant it in a location where it will not interfere with the native plants.
Manzanitas are native to Oregon, and include a variety of species. The most common species in Oregon is the Hairy Manzanita, which occupys stabilized sand dunes. Other varieties include the Green Leaf Manzanita and the Pine Mat Manzanita.
